Find & Rent Batting Cages

Academy, Backyard Cage, Field: What Each Means on CageList

By CageList TeamNovember 5, 20266 min read

You open CageList and see words like academy, sports performance, backyard cage and field. They are not the same thing. The label decides whether you can book, who you are dealing with, and what an owner can do with the page. This guide says what each one is, where to find it, and what you can do there as a family and as an owner.

The short version

  • Academy: a baseball or softball training business. Browse academies.
  • Sports performance: a strength and conditioning gym. See sports performance gyms.
  • Backyard cage: a private cage you rent by the hour. Find a backyard cage.
  • Field: a public or community diamond. Find a field.
  • Coach: a private lesson coach. Find a coach.
  • Leagues and teams: men's leagues, Little Leagues, travel teams, free agents and training partners.
  • Camps, classes and tournaments: things with a date, a price and a sign-up.

Academy

An academy is any baseball or softball training business. That means cages, coaches, lessons, camps, and often travel teams under one roof. A business that calls itself a facility or a training center is still an academy here, as long as the work is baseball or softball training. You will find them on the academies directory by state and city. Indoor ones also show up under indoor batting cages, which is the page to use when rain or cold is the problem.

Families: see what a place offers, which coaches work there and what programs run. Most academy pages are information pages first. Whether you can book cage time there depends on the Bookable badge, covered below.

Owners: claim your academy. You search for your name or city, confirm it is yours, and it takes about two minutes. If it is not listed, you can add it. The longer walkthrough is in claim your batting cage facility's page.

Sports performance

Sports performance means strength and conditioning gyms. We keep them separate on purpose. A gym that does cages and coaches is an academy. A gym that only lifts is sports performance. A strength gym with no cage, and no baseball or softball on its own website, does not appear on the indoor batting cage pages.

Families: use the sports performance filter when you want to get stronger, not take swings. Owners: claim your page the same way an academy does, through the claim page.

Backyard cage

A backyard cage is a private batting cage at someone's home. It is the one kind of place that is always bookable by the hour. You get the whole cage to yourself, close to home, with no membership.

Families: search the backyard cage page, pick a time and pay online. Owners: list your cage. You set the rate and the hours. It is free to list and takes about ten minutes. If you are still deciding whether to build one, the build guide and the zoning guide come first, and types of batting cages shows what the options look like.

Field

A field is a public or community baseball or softball diamond. Field pages are mostly for finding, not booking. A few fields can be reserved online, and those show a Book button. You see where the diamonds are near you, then pair them with a cage, a team or a league. Start at the fields directory. If you run a field and something on its page is wrong, tell us through the contact page.

Coaches

A coach on CageList teaches private baseball or softball lessons. Every coach listed passed a Checkr background check before going live. That check reflects the day it was run, it does not include county courthouse record searches, and it is not our endorsement of their coaching. The background check page spells out what it covers.

Families: open the coach directory, see the hourly price, and book a lesson online. Coaches: read how coaching works here, then apply at become a coach. A person reviews every application.

Leagues and teams

Teams and leagues are people, not places, so they live in their own directories:

  • Men's leagues are adult leagues, listed by state and city.
  • Little Leagues are chartered youth leagues. Little League International is the body that charters them, and its own site is the source for the program itself.
  • Travel teams are travel, club and select programs by age group. Their tryouts and open roster spots have their own pages.
  • Free agents are adult-league players who post a profile so a captain short on Sunday morning can find them.
  • Training partners are local adult-league players open to hit, throw batting practice and get reps in.

Owners and coaches: a team or league page is free to claim. Search for yours on the claim page. If you are only looking for a team, find a team searches all of them at once.

Camps, classes and tournaments

A camp runs several days in a row, usually over a school break. A clinic is one session on one skill. Both are on the camps board, and each links to the organizer's sign-up page. Coaches and facilities can announce one for free, and a person reviews every announcement before it goes live. A class run by a coach has its own page with the dates, the price and a registration form.

Tournaments are listed on the tournaments page with dates, ages, entry fee and distance from your town. Register sends you to the organizer's own entry page. Organizers on the list include Perfect Game and USSSA, and you can add an event to your team's calendar.

What the badges mean

  • Claimed and verified: the owner claimed the page and we confirmed it is theirs. Anything not claimed is labeled unclaimed, so you know nobody has checked the details.
  • Featured: a claimed academy or facility that took the paid upgrade for a fuller page and better placement. Founding academies get Featured free through March 31, 2027.
  • Bookable: you can reserve and pay on CageList. Backyard cages always are. An academy becomes bookable once online booking is switched on for it, which needs a claimed, Featured page.
  • Background checked: on a coach, the Checkr check described above.

If a page has no Book button, it is a directory page. It still tells you where the place is and how to reach it.

Why it is sorted this way

Ask a parent group where to play and you get ten different answers, and many are out of date. Cages, academies, fields, coaches and teams all sit in different places, so families and coaches spend their time hunting. CageList puts them in one place and labels each one for what it really is. That is why a cage and coaches business is an academy, a lifting gym is sports performance, and a park is a field. You can read the bigger picture on what CageList is and how it works. If you are weighing a cage at home against a trip to an academy, backyard cage vs indoor facility goes through the choice.
