Every coach with a Background Check Verified badge passed a background check run by Checkr, an outside company that screens people for a living. This page says what that check looks at, what it leaves out, and what we still ask parents to do.
A check is one useful piece of information. It is not a promise, and we want you to know exactly where it stops.
The coach's Social Security number is traced to see that it matches their name, date of birth and past addresses. This confirms the person is who they say they are. It also shows where they have lived, which tells the next searches where to look.
A search of national criminal record databases, which pull together court and corrections records from many states. It looks for convictions and other serious records tied to the coach's identity.
A search of the national sex offender registry and state registries. A coach who appears on any of them does not pass.
The check also includes a global watchlist search, which looks for the coach's name on international sanctions and watchlists.
Please read this part. It matters as much as the list above.
A badge is a good start. These steps are still yours, and they work with every coach, checked or not.
