How the levels differ
D1, D2 and D3 are the three NCAA divisions. The NAIA is a separate association of smaller colleges, and the NJCAA runs two-year college softball. They differ in how athletic aid works, how big a roster is and how coaches recruit, so a player usually builds a list across more than one level. Our recruiting advice explains what to ask before you pay anyone.
School, level and location facts come from the U.S. Department of Education (the Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act 2024-25 filings and the IPEDS institution directory). Nicknames and conferences are compiled from public lists and left blank when we could not match them with confidence. Sources: EADA athletics data, IPEDS institution directory. Spot a mistake?
