
Most machines that stop throwing strikes are not broken. The wheel is the wear part, and it fails in patterns you can read. Here's how to tell what you're looking at — and where to actually get the part.
A pitching machine is built to outlast almost everything else in your cage. The wheel is not. It is a rubber surface being asked to grip and launch a ball thousands of times, and it wears the way any tire wears — gradually, then all at once.
That matters because the symptoms of a worn wheel look exactly like a broken machine. Pitches sail. The strike zone drifts. One ball in ten goes somewhere it shouldn't. Owners start shopping for a replacement machine when they needed a part.

Match what your machine is doing to what usually causes it.
Pitches drifting high, or height creeping up mid-session
Likely: Glazed wheel
The wheel surface polishes smooth and stops gripping. Grip loss shows up as height before it shows up as speed. Most common failure, and the one owners most often blame on the machine.
Roughly one pitch in ten is wild, the rest are fine
Likely: Flat spot
A worn patch hits the ball differently once per rotation. The giveaway is that the misses are intermittent and the good pitches still look right.
Speed dropping at the same dial setting
Likely: Wheel wear, or drive/motor
Check the wheel first — a worn wheel loses effective diameter. If the wheel looks true and the speed still sags, it is the drive side, not the rubber.
Breaking pitches inconsistent on a 2- or 3-wheel machine
Likely: Uneven wear between wheels
Break comes from the speed differential between wheels. When one wheel wears faster than the others, the differential drifts and the pitch shape goes with it. Replace worn wheels as a set on multi-wheel machines.
Grinding, rattling, or new vibration
Likely: Not the wheel
Stop using it. Vibration points at a bearing, a loose mount, or a bent shaft. Running a machine that has started vibrating turns a part failure into a machine failure.
Balls feeding but not firing consistently
Likely: Feed path, not the wheel
There is no published hour count for wheel life — it depends entirely on volume, ball type, and storage. These are the variables you control.
Real leather at high speed
Leather seams are abrasive. A machine run hard with real baseballs wears wheels materially faster than the same machine run with dimple or training balls.
Grit and dirt
Balls picked up off dirt carry grit into the wheel every rotation. This is the single easiest thing to fix — wipe the balls, not just the machine.
Mixing ball types
Alternating dimple and leather through the same wheel wears it unevenly and makes your pitches less repeatable in the same session.
Weather and UV
Rubber left in the sun hardens and glazes faster. A cover between sessions costs almost nothing and is the highest-leverage habit for an outdoor cage.
Wet or damaged balls
Cracked and waterlogged balls are hard on the wheel and unsafe for the hitter. Pull them from the bucket.
