There's a certain kind of hitter's cage you only get from someone who's spent a lifetime in the game, and this indoor batting cage in West Covina, CA is exactly that: a clean, well-lit, carefully maintained tunnel built by a lifelong ballplayer and travel-ball coach.
The cage
Richard's covered cage runs 35 feet long, 12 wide, and 12 tall, and it's kept in great shape session after session. The setup centers on a Jugs 2-wheel pitching machine that even throws breaking balls, along with an L-screen, a hitting tee, clean baseballs and dimple balls, and enough space for infield work. It's self-serve, so it works for tee work, soft or front toss, or cranking up the Jugs for live speed. A bathroom, parking, lighting, music, and seating are all on hand. Sessions are $40/hour with six guests included and no extra-guest fees.
Who it's for
With a machine that throws curves plus tee, soft-toss, and front-toss options, the cage suits solo hitters and small groups working a full routine. The breaking-ball capability is a real step up for advanced hitters who want to see more than fastballs, and there's room for glove work when you want to mix in fielding reps.
The host
You can feel the care in the details. "I've been playing baseball all my life and at 43 years young I still play amateur baseball. I'm also a travel-ball coach," Richard says. He spends much of his free time working with his two sons and his own players, and this cage, kept spotless and ready to hit, is clearly an extension of that. Now he opens it to other families, too.
Good to know
The cage is covered and lit for evening sessions, and it's consistently maintained, so it plays clean every time. Parking, seating, and a bathroom make family visits easy. The one house rule to note: no cleats.
