Fielding & Throwing Fundamentals
We gamify everything. Every fielding and catch drill has a name, a rule, and a way to be “out.” That's what makes a kid want to run it again.
At CageList we teach fielding and throwing as games, so every rep has something at stake.
01
Basic defensive fielding skills
- Survivor: Playing Catch
- If the ball hits the ground at any time, or a player throws before the coach says throw, that player and their partner are out. Add “lava rules” for more advanced players: no moving your feet.
- Survivor: Grounders
- Field it cleanly and make the throw to the net.
- Team Survivor: Grounders With a Double Play
- Everything has to happen in sequence: fielders look at each other and acknowledge, yell “2-2-2,” yell “1-1-1.”
- Survivor: Pop Flies
- Two hands, call it three times, catch it, make the throw.
- 3 on the Line
- A line drill for reps and reaction speed.
- Survivor With Grounder and Pancake Glove
- Same survivor format, using a pancake glove to force clean hands.

This survivor format is one piece of a much larger drill library.
